John Rampton is a CEO and a father. In a Business Insider article, he shares 8 tips to manage your day to have enough time to be a strong employee and an influential and present father.
1. Use the Ivy Lee method
Right before bed, write down the six most important things you want to accomplish the next day. List them in starting with the most important task first thing in the morning. No more than six.
2. Wake up before everyone else
There is plenty of research on waking up early and its physical and mental health benefits. However, by doing so, you also get some needed alone time to accomplish tasks with minimal distractions.
3. Prioritize your daily tasks, and set a schedule
Look at your list of six items, block off this specific length of time in your calendar, set a timer, and eliminate any distractions — shut the door, and turn off all notifications. John suggests the Pomodoro Technique.
4. Bundle tasks
Simply bundle similar tasks together so you’re not switching mindsets.
5. Sync your work with your child’s routine
Babies have their own rhythm. The sooner you get in sync with their routine, the easier your life will get. As your children get older, you will need to continue to mold your routine to fit their schedule. For example, If their sport or music practice is an hour, do some light work, like responding to emails or calling clients.
6. Outsource and delegate wherever possible
Rather than worry about every single task, outsource or delegate. Find innovative ways to do so.
7. Have a dedicated workspace
It can be understated the importance of having a dedicated work space that allows you the freedom from distraction to get work done. Plus, your mind will pair that space with doing work, and you will be motivated. For example, if you’re doing work in bed — your mind has already paired the bed with being asleep, so you’re likely to be less productive in that environment (and will probably fall asleep, too).
8. Unplug
Dedicated personal time into your schedule — allow yourself some self-care to recharge and refuel.
